70 Years of Stern Lawyers in
Steubenville
Joseph was the first Stern to practice law in
Steubenville, setting up his practice in the late 1930's. After
World War II ended, Joe and brothers Hyman and Nathan established the law
firm of Stern, Stern & Stern.
In the 1970's, Hyman's sons Gary and Stephen joined the firm, along with
Nathan's son James. By 1978
there were six Stern lawyers in the firm. Joseph was no longer practicing
law, having become a wealthy
industrialist, but he still liked having his name on the front door.

STEPHEN, HYMAN, JOSEPH and NATHAN,
standing in front of the law office at 102 North Third Street in
Steubenville.
In 1981, Hyman, Gary and Stephen split to form
their own firm, setting up offices on the top floor
of the Bank One building. Nathan and James remained in the North
Third Street office. From 1981 to
2005 there were two firms in town both calling themselves Stern Stern &
Stern. For some, especially the
U.S. Post Office, it was a little confusing.
Joseph, Hyman and Nathan are now deceased.
Stephen, after serving as Jefferson County Prosecutor
for twenty years, retired in 2001. James, who was rarely seen in
public, closed his North Third Street
office some time in 2006 and quietly moved out of town.
Gary Stern is now the last Stern lawyer
in Steubenville.
